Delaware 5, Temple 4 April 10, 2001 Zeigler Shuts Down Owls in Relief Vince Vukovich singled home the game-winning run in the eighth inning NEWARK, DE -- Vince Vukovich (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) singled home Peter Maestrales with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to put the Blue Hens up for good in Delaware's 5-4 baseball win over Temple Tuesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium. With one out in the eighth, Maestrales coaxed a walk, his third of the game, from Temple pitcher Mike Caron and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After Chris Kolodzey flied out, Jeff Rugg came in to pitch to Vukovich, who singled into left field to score Maestrales with the winning run. Delaware reliever Brian Zeigler (1-0), who allowed just three hits and one unearned run in four innings, allowed a two-out double in the ninth to Jeff Roma but got Bob Filler to ground out to shortstop Kris Dufner to end the game. Temple (10-20) got single runs in the first, third, and fourth innings to take a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth before Delaware (19-8) got on the board. John Schneider hit his team-leading fifth home run to lead off the inning, and the Hens added three more runs without a hit. Dufner reached second on an error by Owls right fielder Joe Lyall, and consecutive walks to Steve Harden and Casey Fahy loaded the bases with no outs. Caron (2-4) then relieved Temple starter Brian Ursone, and promptly threw a wild pitch to allow Dufner to score. After a Reid Gorecki sacrifice fly scored Harden, Fahy scored when Andrew Salvo reached on an error by second baseman Jim Tully. Temple tied the game in the seventh, as with two outs Zeigler tried to pick off Roma at first base but threw the ball away. Roma came all the way around to score and tie the game. The Owls had a scoring threat ended in the top of the eighth when Kyle Sweppenhiser was thrown out at home by Salvo in a double steal attempt. The Blue Hens won despite only three hits in a game for the first time since a 1-0 seven-inning win over Vermont on April 2, 1999.
