Delaware 4, Towson 1 Towson 12, Delaware 3 April 8, 2001 Blue Hens and Tigers Split Second Straight Doubleheader Vic Sage scattered five hits in the complete game win. NEWARK, DE -- Delaware pitcher Vic Sage pitched a five-hitter in the opener and Towson catcher Casey Stidham hit two home runs in the nightcap as Delaware and Towson split a baseball doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium. The Blue Hens won the opener, 4-1, while Towson took the nightcap, 12-3. In the first game, Sage allowed a run in the second inning on an RBI single by Brian McKenna, but allowed just two hits in the last five innings to pick up the win. The Hens (18-8, 6-2 America East) tied the game in the third with an unearned run, and took the lead for good with two in the fourth. John Schneider led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a Vince Vukovich single. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch by Bryan Simmering, and after Vukovich moved to third on a second wild pitch, he scored on a sacrifice fly by Kris Dufner. The Hens concluded the scoring in the sixth when Schneider led off with a home run. Towson (18-8, 5-3) wasted little time in taking control of the second game. With two outs in the first inning, Scott Bacon hit a two-run homer, and after a hit batter and a walk, Casey Stidham hit a three-run shot. All five runs were unearned. The Hens got one back in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly by Peter Maestrales, but the Tigers added one in the second and three in the fourth to put the game away. Delaware starter Mike Mihalik lasted three innings and was roughed up for six hits and eight runs, although only three were earned, and took the loss, his first as a Blue Hen. Towson starter Matt Nein scattered nine hits and gave up only three runs in picking up the complete game win. Reid Gorecki, Chris Kolodzey, and Steve Harden all had two hits for Delaware in the nightcap.
