Delaware 3, Vermont 2 Delaware 7, Vermont 4 April 28, 2001 Blue Hens strengthen hold on first place in conference with sweep Teddy Puitz singled home the game-winning run in the opener Vic Sage pitched a complete game in the nightcap NEWARK, DE -- Teddy Puitz singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh in the opener and Vic Sage allowed just two earned runs in a complete-game win in the nightcap as the University of Delaware baseball team swept a doubleheader from Vermont, 3-2 and 7-4, Saturday at Bob Hannah Stadium. Delaware (32-10, 14-4 America East) has now won 13 straight games, the longest streak since the 1998 team won 20 in a row from March 3 through April 7. Vermont (19-16, 6-12) took a 2-0 lead in the first game in the top of the fifth when Scott Bourhill hit a two-run home run off Blue Hen starter Rich McGuire (7-3). The Hens got one back in the bottom of the fifth on some help from the Catamount defense. With two men on and two out, Vermont second baseman Raymond Montanez missed a routine ground ball hit by Casey Fahy, allowing Reid Gorecki to score. Delaware tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on consecutive doubles by Chris Kolodzey and John Schneider. Vermont had a chance to re-take the lead in the top of the seventh, but McGuire got Kyle Rikert to ground out to third with the go-ahead run on base. Gorecki then led off the bottom of the seventh with a single, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Steve Harden. Brian Cain then came in to pitch for the Catamounts to face Puitz, who singled into right field to score Gorecki and win the game for the Hens. Delaware jumped on Vermont in the nightcap, scoring two first-inning runs on RBI singles by Vince Vukovich and Doug Eitelman. The Catamounts got one run back in the top of the third, but the Hens responded with two runs without the benefit of a hit in the bottom of the frame. Peter Maestrales led off by popping the ball up in the infield, but first baseman Dan Ruane dropped the ball. After Kolodzey was hit by a pitch, Schneider hit a ground ball to third baseman Michael Cole, who threw wildly at second base, allowing Maestrales to score and Kolodzey to advance to third. Vukovich then hit a sacrifice fly to give Delaware a 4-1 lead. The Hens added a run in the fourth on a two-out single by Andrew Salvo, and put the game away with two more in the sixth on run-scoring hits by Gorecki and Salvo. Delaware starter Sage (6-2) allowed just two earned runs on seven hits to pick up the win for the Hens.
