Delaware 4, Vermont 3 Vermont 2, Delaware 1 April 29, 2001 Blue Hens Take Three of Four From Catamounts Kris Dufner went 3-for-4 with two RBI in the opener NEWARK, DE -- Blue Hens shortstop Kris Dufner went 3-for-4 in the opener and Vermont pitcher Jeff Dixon hurled a four-hitter in the nightcap as the Delaware and Vermont baseball teams split a doubleheader Sunday at Bob Hannah Stadium. Delaware won the first game, 4-3, while the Catamounts took the nightcap, 2-1. In the first game, Dufner got Delaware (33-11, 15-5 America East) on the board first in the second inning, as he doubled and scored on a single by Andrew Salvo. In the third, John Schneider and Vince Vukovich singled with one out and scored on a two-run double by Dufner to put Delaware up 3-0. Vermont (20-17, 7-13) responded in the fifth. With two men on and two out, Scott Bourhill doubled down the right field line to cut the lead to 3-2. The Catamounts tied the game in the sixth on a ground out by Kyle Miller. The game remained knotted at three until the bottom of the seventh. Steve Harden led off the inning with a single. Dufner then bunted to Vermont pitcher Brian Robinson, who tried to force out Casey Fahy, who pinch ran for Harden, at second base. But Robinson's throw sailed into center field, putting runners on first and second with no outs. Bobby Fry then walked, and Doug Thompson relieved Robinson. The first batter Thompson faced was Reid Gorecki, who hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Fahy with the winning run. Delaware starter Jason Vincent bounced back from a rocky outing Thursday against Temple with a complete-game win to improve to 7-1 on the season. Vincent allowed eight hits and three runs while striking out four. Vermont took the early lead in the second game, as Kyle Rikert led off the game with a single and scored on a ground out by Jeff Tarigo. Then both starting pitchers, Mike Mihalik for Delaware and Jeff Dixon for Vermont, settled down as the game became a pitcher's duel. Delaware had a chance in the third inning, but Chris Kolodzey struck out with the bases loaded. The Hens did tie the game in the fourth, as Schneider walked to lead off the frame, advanced to second on a single by Vukovich, moved to third on a ground out by Dufner, and scored on a Harden sacrifice fly. Vermont would get the lead back in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Mark Denzine, and Dixon allowed just one hit in the final two innings to preserve the win.
