Delaware 15, Villanova 13 March 14, 2001 Blue Hen Hit Barrage Downs Wildcats C John Schneider Hit His First Home Run of the Season Chris Kolodzey tied a school-record with three doubles in the game NEWARK, DE -- The Blue Hens rallied with six runs in the bottom of the eighth and Pre-season All-American pitcher Rich McGuire slammed the door in the ninth as University of Delaware defeated Villanova, 15-13, in baseball action at Bob Hannah Stadium Wednesday afternoon. The game was an adventure for the best of pitchers and outfielders as a 30-mile per hour wind blew out to right field. The result was a combined 28 runs on 29 hits, 17 of those going for extra-bases. Every Delaware batter had at least one extra-base hit, led by Chris Kolodzey with three doubles. Kolodzey's day tied a school record accomplished eight times before. The last time it was done was by Matt Ardizzone vs. Coastal Carolina back on Feb. 27, 1997. Delaware, which moved to 5-5 and won its four straight, took a 6-0 lead in the first when the first six batters all reached on base hits and scored. The big bombs in the inning came from Andrew Salvo's two-run homer and Vince Vukovich's three-run homer. Villanova (6-4), however, rallied with one in the third, five in the fourth, one if the fifth and five in the sixth to take a 12-9 lead. In the five-rin fourth, the Wildcats got RBI singles from Brian Hearne and Marshall Canosa, a sacrifice fly by Chris Graziano and a two-run double by Nick Plantex. The Wildcats took advantage of four walks in the sixth by reliever Mike Mahalik and three singles to take a three-run lead. They extended that lead in the top of the eighth when Dave Pizzini tripled home Graziano. However, Delaware wasn't done. After reliever Adrian Schau got the first two batters out, Andrew Salvo walked. Peter Maestrales' folliwed with his third home run of the season on a line shot over the right field fence to pull the Blue Hens within two, 13-11. Kolodzey walked and Schaur gave way to Villanova's closer Hearne. However, Hearne walked Vukovich to put the tying run on base. Steve Harden lifted a deep fly ball to warning track in center field that Graziano never saw off the bat. By the time the ball was retrieved, two runs were in, Harden had a triple and the score was tied, 13-13. John Schneider then followed with a home run with the wind in right to give Delaware the lead.
