Liberty Bell Classic Semifinals Delaware 5, Villanova 4 (10 innings) April 24, 2001 Blue Hens advance to LBC finals for ninth time in 10 years John Schneider's two-run homer in the tenth was the difference PHILADELPHIA -- Delaware catcher John Schneider hit a two-run home run and Vic Sage got a game-ending double play with the tying and winning runs on base as the University of Delaware baseball team won its ninth straight game, 5-4 in 10 innings, Tuesday afternoon over Villanova in the Liberty Bell Classic semifinals at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia. Delaware (28-10), which advances to the championship game Thursday night at the Vet against the winner of Tuesday night's Temple-Drexel game, got strong pitching efforts from both starter Mike Pelcher and reliever Sage. Pelcher threw a season-high seven innings, allowing three runs on six hits. The junior lefty allowed a leadoff double to start the bottom of the seventh, but retired the next three Wildcats to keep the game tied at three. The game stayed that way until the tenth, when Peter Maestrales struck out to open the inning but reached first on a wild pitch by Wildcat pitcher Brian Hearne. After Chris Kolodzey struck out, Schneider hit a two-run homer over the wall in left centerfield. Villanova (18-22-1) quickly answered in the bottom of the tenth. Matt Longo led off with a single, and moved to second on a groundout. After singles by Mike Houser and Rob Cafiero cut the lead to 5-4 and put runners on first and second, Sage got Adrian Schau to hit into a double play to end the game. Longo, who became Villanova's all-time hit leader, directly contributed to giving the Wildcats the early lead. In the first inning, he tripled and scored on a groundout, and in the third he hit a two-run homer to put Villanova ahead 3-0. Delaware got two runs back in the fourth, as Reid Gorecki singled home Schneider and, after a Kris Dufner single, scored on a double steal attempt. Dufner was caught stealing second but stayed in a rundown long enough for Gorecki to cross the plate. The Hens tied the game in the sixth when Kolodzey walked to open the inning and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Dufner. The win puts Delaware in the finals of the Liberty Bell Classic for the ninth time in the 10 years the tournament has been held. The Hens won the event in 1992, '94, '95, and '97.
