MYRTLE BEACH, SC -- Delaware pitcher
Brian Zeigler hit first baseman Todd Buchanan with
the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to force in the
winning run as Western Carolina defeated Delaware, 7-6, in
baseball action Sunday at Coastal Federal Field in Myrtle
Beach.
Allen Beck led off the ninth inning by
coaxing a walk from Blue Hen pitcher Mike Pelcher.
Right fielder Rod Goldston then singled to left center, and
both runners advanced a base. After Western Carolina's
Donovan Minero was intentionally walked, Zeigler entered the
game and hit Buchanan with his second pitch.
Western Carolina (4-8) jumped on Delaware
starter Mike Mihalik, scoring four runs in the first
inning. The first three batters reached on two singles and a
walk and, after a strikeout, Mihalik hit Minero to force in
a run. The Catamounts increaed their lead when two runs
scored on a dropped fly ball by Casey Fahy, and
scored their fourth on a double steal.
Delaware (1-3) responded with two runs in
the fourth on just one hit. Vince Vukovich singled in
the first run, and Chris Kolodzey scored the second
on a wild pitch.
After the Catamounts scored a run in the
bottom of the fourth, the Hens tied the game with three in
the fifth. Kris Dufner tripled to start the inning,
and scored on a sacrifice fly by Steve Harden. Fahy
then walked, and scored on a triple by third baseman
Peter Maestrales, who then scored on a double by
Kolodzey.
Western Carolina regained the lead in the
bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Goldston. Delaware
tied the game at six in the eighth on a leadoff home run by
Maestrales, and neither team could score again until the
bottom of the ninth.
Catamounts reliever Ryan Basner, who
struck out all four batters he faced, got the win, while
Pelcher took the loss for the Hens.
