Delaware 7, Wilmington College 6 April 25, 2001 McGuire Saves Hens' Tenth Straight Win Andrew Salvo went 4-for-5 in the win WILMINGTON, DE -- Second baseman Andrew Salvo went 4-for-5 and Rich McGuire pitched the final two innings to pick up his first career save as the University of Delaware baseball team held off Wilmington College, 7-6, Wednesday night at Frawley Stadium. The Blue Hens (29-10) took a 7-4 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning, but Tony Lofink, who played two years at Delaware, hit a two-run home run off McGuire to cut the lead to one. In the ninth, Jamie French led off with a double down the left field line and was advanced to third on a groundout by Kyndrich Doggett. But McGuire got Jason Bedford to pop up to shallow center field, and Peter Maestrales made a nice backhand play on a groundball by Ed Cieslak, and his throw nipped the Wilmington caltcher to end the game. Delaware got solo runs in each of the first three innings on an RBI single by Chris Kolodzey, a groundout by Salvo, and a sacrifice fly by Steve Harden to take a 3-1 lead after three. The Blue Hens appeared to take control in the fourth, when Reid Gorecki singled and advanced to third on a double by Salvo. Maestrales then singled both runners home, and eventually scored on a single by Frank Fresconi to put Delaware on top 6-1. Wilmington (28-7-1) would answer right back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, though, on a bases loaded single by Kevin Murphy off Hens starter Mike Mihalik, who picked up his third win of the season. The Wildcats got another run in the fifth on a double steal attempt, but Delaware got the run right back in the sixth when Kolodzey singled home Salvo. The score remained the same until Lofink's homer in the eighth. Nick Spiewak pitched two hitless innings for Delaware, while Wilmington starter T.J. Ostrishko allowed six runs on nine hits in four innings to pick up the loss. Delaware will be back in action Thursday in the Liberty Bell Classic finals.
