UD Explodes for 33 Runs to Take Two from Albany


Steve Van Note went 3 for 5 with two homeruns
and five RBIs in the double-header
 

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware baseball team scored 31 runs in two wins over the University of Albany on a cold and windy afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium Saturday afternoon. Delaware has now won five straight as it improved its season record to 10-9 to move above .500 for the first time this season.

The Blue Hens made the most of its five hits in game one as all five went for extra bases. John Schneider and Steve Harden hit two-run doubles in a five-run first inning for the Blue Hens.

The Great Danes came right back as they took advantage of a pair of Delaware errors to score three in the top of the second.

The Hens would put it out of reach in the bottom of the third when it scored four highlighted by Kris Dufner's (Philadelphia, PA/Garnet Valley) two RBI double to right. Centerfielder Steve Van Note added more insurance, hitting his team leading sixth home run in the sixth.

Jason Vincent (Seaford, DE/Seaford) went the distance for UD, giving up five earned runs and scattering 13 hits to pick up his third win of the season.

As the winds picked up, the Blue Hen bats heated up they scored in every inning but the second in the afternoon session.Doug Eitelman (Wilmington, DE/Concord) went three for three with a homerun and five RBI's to lead eight Blue Hens with multiple hits. Mark Michael, Matt Wimer, Van Note and Dufner also homered for Delaware in the 22 hit assault.

Along with its second best run outage of the year, Delaware got a fine pitching performance by ace RIch McGuire (Wantagh, NY/MacArthur/Providence). The senior captain went six innings holding the Great Danes to five hits, no earned runs and finishing with five strikeouts

Blue Hen leftfielder Casey Fahy hit safely in his 11th straight game with a double in the first inning of game one but went 0 for 3 in the second game to see his season-high hitting-streak come to an end.

Delaware looks for the series sweep as it meets Albany one more time at Hannah Stadium, Sunday at 12 noon.
