1 Rogers Gets Revenge; Van Note Homers as Blue Hens Advance
MANTEO, NC -- University of Delaware freshman righthander Jason Rogers gained some revenge and a much-needed first round victory as the Blue Hens opened up play in the Colonial Athletic Association Baseball Tournament with a 4-1 win over George Mason Tuesday morning at Coy Tillett Field. The No. 5 seed Blue Hens (35-20), who won their 10th straight conference tournament game over the last four seasons, advanced to a second round meeting with top seed James Madison (41-12) Wednesday at 3:15 p.m. The double-elimination tournament continues through Saturday with the champion earning an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. George Mason (27-27) will take on the loser of Tuesday's Virginia Commonwealth vs. UNC Wilmington game Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. Rogers, a freshman from New Castle, DE (William Penn), went the distance, scattering six hits, walking three, and striking out eight Patriot batters. He avenged an earlier loss to George Mason back on April 20 when he allowed 12 hits and nine runs in six innings of work in a 14-7 loss. "They got to me earlier this year so I wanted to go out and get some revenge," said Rogers, who improved to 4-4 on the season as he outdueled George Mason's John Sterling, a former Delaware State standout. "I tried to concentrate on keeping the ball low and at their knees and it worked." Delaware's junior rightfielder Steve Van Note (Atlantic City/Brigantine, NJ) helped Rogers by knocking in two runs with an RBI fielder's choice in the first inning and a solo home run, his 12th of the season, in the fourth inning which proved to be the game-winner. First team All-CAA centerfielder Reid Gorecki (Kellenberg/East Rockaway, NJ) had another big day for the Hens, going 3 for 4 with a run scored, three stolen bases, and a double. He opened the first inning with a single for the Hens, stole second and third, and scored on Van Note's fielder's choice. Gorecki added some insurance in the eighth when he followed an RBI double by Steve Harden (Dickinson/Wilmington, DE) with a run-scoring bloop double to centerfield for a 4-1 lead. George Mason got its only run in the fourth inning on a solo home run by catcher Brian Anderson, his ninth of the season. First baseman Kevin McNeil also collected two hits for the Patriots. Sterling also went the distance for the Patriots, allowing seven hits and four runs to fall to 5-6 on the season. "When you get the pitching like we did today, it makes it easier on the defense and on the hitters," said Delaware head coach Jim Sherman, who led the Blue Hens to their fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance last season. "When you put all three ingredients together, we are a tough team to beat." The Blue Hens, won captured the America East title each of the last four seasons, extended their conference tournament win streak to 10 games with the victory. After a second round loss, Delaware won its final three games of the 1999 America East Tournament and swept three games in the tournament each of the last two seasons at Wilmington's Frawley Stadium.
