3 Five-run third sparks Dukes
MANTEO, NC -- Brent Metheny's grand slam was the big blow in a five-run third for James Madison University as the top-seeded Dukes defeated Delaware, 7-3, in Game Four of the 2002 OBX/Colonial Athletic Association Baseball Tournament at Coy Tillet, Sr. Memorial Field Wednesday afternoon.
The loss drops Delaware into the elimination bracket. The Blue Hens (35-21) will face No. 6 seed Virginia Commonwealth at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. VCU lost to No. 2 seed William & Mary 1-0 Wednesday night. James Madison, 42-12 and ranked No. 28 in this week's Collegiate Baseball Magazine Top 30, will face William & Mary Thursday at 2:15 p.m. in the winner's bracket final. The loss also snapped Delaware's 10-game conference tournament winning streak. The Blue Hens had not lost a conference tournament game since May 21, 1999 when they lost to Towson, 4-1, in the second round of the America East Tournament at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington, DE. Delaware, however, came back through the elimination bracket with three straight wins to win the America East title and advance to the NCAA Tournament. "We didn't deliver with the opportunity we had today," said Delaware head coach Jim Sherman. "We let them off the hook early (bases loaded in the second and third innings). It is tough to beat them, though, with the caliber of pitching they have." Jason Vincent took the loss for Delaware (6-4). A junior from Seaford, DE, Vicent recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts, but fell victim to the Dukes' long ball. Vincent gave up the slam to Metheny and a solo home run by Travis Ebaugh on Vincent's first pitch of the afternoon after Delaware had staked him to a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the top half of the first. It was the fourth home run of the season for both Metheny and Ebaugh. Delaware first baseman Steve Harden played a little long ball himself in the third to break the 1-1 tie. Harden's solo home run to lead off the third and an RBI single by John Schneider gave Delaware a 3-1 lead after 2-1/2 innings. It was Harden's eighth home run of the season. However, the Dukes scored five times in the third and tacked on an insurance run in the seventh to move to within one win of its second straight championship round appearance and fifth in its 16-year CAA tenure. The Dukes have never won a CAA baseball title. Jared Doyle picked up the win for James Madison to move his record to 11-2. After allowing the three early runs, Doyle shutout the Blue Hens over the next four innings before yielding to Chris Cochran in the eighth. Cochran retired the Hens in order in the eighth and ninth to close out the win. AGATE:
