March 8, 2002 Hornets Defeat Blue Hens for the First Time in 14 Meetings
NEWARK, DE -- Roger Richardson hit a leadoff double in the top of the ninth inning then scored on a passed ball to give Delaware State University a 12-11 lead, and it's first ever victory over the University of Delaware in baseball action Friday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium. The Hornets (12-9) jumped out to an early three run advantage in a wild game that had six lead changes. That lead did not stand for long as the Blue Hens (2-8) answered right back with five runs on five hits in the first stanza. From there the two teams would trade scoring bursts back and forth. Delaware State erased a three-run deficit in the third inning as Malkum King blasted his fourth home run of the year, a two-run shot to give the Hornets a 7-6 lead. Two innings later, Steve Van Note (Brigantine, NJ/Atlantic City) and John Schneider (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrenceville) hit back-to-back solo home runs to take back the lead. Delaware would take a 11-9 edge heading into the eighth inning, but the Hornets would tie the score as two baserunners crossed home plate as a result of Blue Hen fielding errors. After Richardson scored the decisive run in the ninth, pitcher Joe Brzeczek set down the Hens giving the Hornets the victory, the first ever in their 14 game history against Delaware. For the Blue Hens, Casey Fahy went 4 for 6 with three runs scored, while Kris Dufner added a double and two RBI's on three hits. Bret Underwood paced the Hornet offense by hitting 3 for 5 with a double and two home runs. The two teams will be back at it on Saturday afternoon when they wrap up the series with a double-header beginning at noon at Hannah Stadium. The second game of the twinbill, which was originally scheduled for Sunday, was moved to Saturday due to a threat of rain.
