Strong Pitching Helps Blue Hens Sweep Past Hornets


Steve Harden blasted a grand slam in the first game.

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware got stellar pitching performances from Jason Rogers and Jason Vincent to take both games of a doubleheader by scores of 9-2 and 12-2 against rival Delaware State University in baseball action Saturday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.

In the first game, Steve Harden (Wilmington, DE/Dickinson) hit a second inning grand slam giving starting pitcher Jason Vincent (Seaford, DE/Seaford) all the cushion he needed as the Blue Hens put away the Hornets 9-2 in the first of two seven inning games played on the day. Vincent went the distance allowing just six hits and two runs for his first victory of the year.

In the second game, Delaware's offense exploded for six runs in the first inning, two in the second, and three in the third, while starter Jason Rogers (New Castle, DE/William Penn) threw seven solid innings giving up just four hits and two runs while striking out seven for his first complete game victory of his career.

Offensively for Delaware (4-8) John Schneider (Lawrenceville, NJ, Lawrenceville) went 4 for 6 with three doubles, five RBI's and three runs in the two games, and Casey Fahy (Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) added to his torrid home hitting spree by going 3 for 8 with three runs and a RBI. Over the last four games, all played at Hannah Stadium, Fahy has gone 9 for 17 with nine runs scored, three RBI's and four stolen bases.

For the Hornets (12-11), Phil Sullinger collected four over the two games, including two doubles, and Bret Underwood hit his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot in the second game.

The Blue Hens will be back in action on Tuesday March 12 when Quinnipac College pays a visit. The game will begin at 3 p.m. at Hannah Stadium.
