Delaware 8, Delaware State 3 Delaware 8, Delaware State 7 May 1, 2002 Blue Hens Close Out Season Series Against Delaware State With Twinbill Sweep Ryan Dulaney recorded his first complete game victory as a Blue Hen DOVER, DE -- The University of Delaware swept both games of a doubleheader against Delaware State University Wednesday afternoon at Soldier Field, cruising to an 8-3 victory in the first game, then holding of a late Hornet rally to take game two 8-7 Junior righthander Ryan Dulaney (Annapolis, MD/Riverdale Baptist) had his best outing of the season, allowing just three hits and two earned runs, going the distance for his first complete game victory as a Blue Hen. Steve Harden (Wilmington, DE/Dickinson) and Doug Eitelman (Wilmington, DE/Concord) each contributed a solo home run and an RBI single for Delaware, and Reid Gorecki (East Rockaway, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) scored two runs although he went hitless in four at-bats snapping his 22-game hitting-streak. Delaware State's Scott Martin and Mike August each hit solo home runs in the losing effort. In the second game, Kevin Maloney ripped a two-run single and the Hornets (33-17) jumped out to a three-run lead early in the first inning. But the Blue Hens fought back scoring eight unanswered runs before the Hornets would mount a comeback attempt in the seventh and final inning. Delaware State would score four runs and load the bases with one out before Blue Hens reliever Steve Harden could retire the final two batters and end the ballgame. Kris Dufner (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) belted his sixth home run of the season, a three-run shot, as he finished the game 2-for-3, while Matt Wimer (Quarryville, PA/Solanco) added two hits of his own, including an RBI double. Kevin Maloney led the Hornets batting 2-for-4 with three RBI, and Scott Martin went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Chris Garrick (Nesconset, NY/Smithtown) picked up his second victory of the season, pitching four scoreless innings in relief.
