East Carolina 10, Delaware 6 February 15, 2002 Third Inning ECU Grand Slam Ruins Blue Hens Season Opener 2B Nick DeCarlo belted a two-run homer in the seventh GREENVILLE, NC -- East Carolina University leadoff hitter Warren Gaspar hit two home runs and knocked in five runs on the day to lead the Pirates to a 10-6 non-league win Friday, spoiling the season opener for the University of Delaware baseball team at Harrington Field. East Carolina (1-0), which was ranked in the top 20 for most of the 2001 season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, took a big early lead with five runs in the second inning and three more in the fourth off UD senior ace Rich McGuire on the way to the victory in their season opener. The two teams will play the second of their three-home series Saturday at 1 p.m. at Harrington Field. The third game will be played Sunday at 1 p.m. The Blue Hens, coming off a 45-15 season in 2001 in which they won the America East Tournament title and advanced to the NCAA Regionals, took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a solo home run by junior rightfielder Reid Gorecki (Kellenberg/East Rockaway, NY), but could never overcome ECU's two big innings. Delaware outhit the Pirates 11-10. Gaspar and third baseman Bryant Ward each collected three of East Carolina's 10 hits with Ward hitting a solo home run in the fourth and second baseman Jedd Sorenson connected on a solo shot in the third. Gorecki went 2 for 5 for the day and also added a double while catcher John Schneider and centerfielder Steve Van Note each had two hits. Junior second baseman Nick DeCarlo (Garnet Valley/Glen Mills, PA) hit his first career home run, a two-run shot in the seventh. Delaware took the brief 1-0 lead on Gorecki's first inning home run, but East Carolina came back with the five-run second against McGuire (0-1) as Luke Cherry had a run-scoring single and Gaspar followed with a grand slam. ECU added a run in the third and three more in the fourth to chase McGuire and put the game away. The Blue Hens battled back as DeCarlo's homer highlighted a three-run seventh and UD added single runs in the eighth on an RBI single by Schneider and in the ninth on a run-scoring double by pinch-hitter Doug Eitelman. McGuire allowed 10 hits and eight earned runs in 3.2 inning and was relieved by Scott Rambo, who allowed just one run and four hits in 4.1 innings in his college debut.
