East Carolina 3, Delaware 2 (10 innings) February 16, 2002 Ward's Bases Loaded Single in 10th Lifts Pirates Kris Dufner had two hits and scored a run for the Blue Hens GREENVILLE, NC -- Bryant Ward's bases loaded single with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted East Carolina past the University of Delaware, 3-2, in baseball action Saturday afternoon at Harrington Field. The Pirates (2-0), who advanced to the NCAA Tournament a year ago when they were ranked in the national Top 20 almost the entire season, downed the Blue Hens (0-2) for the second straight day. The teams will conclude their season-opening three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. The Pirates won Friday's opener 10-6. Ward's clutch hit off Blue Hen freshman Jason Rogers (0-1) made a winner of Glenn Tucker (1-0), who struck out three batters and allowed just one hit in 1 1/3 innings of work. Ward had helped ECU take a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning when he and Darryl Lawhorn each delivered run-scoring singles. The Blue Hens had battled back from a 2-0 deficit by scoring two runs with two outs in the top of the ninth to send the game into extra innings. Shortstop Kris Dufner reached base on a fielder's choice off Neal Sears and advanced to second on a single by Nick DeCarlo. Doug Eitelman followed with a single and Dufner scored on an error by Ward. Delaware's Steve Van Note then greeted Tucker with an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2. Steve Harden struck out to end the inning. Tucker sent Delaware down in order in the 10th, giving way to Ward's heroics in the bottom of the inning. Luke Cherry led off the inning with a single, stole second, and advanced to third on a base hit by Jamie Paige. After Warren Gaspar was intentionally walked, Lawhorn flew out to shallow right field, stranding the runners. Ward then hit the game-winner past Michael at third base. Delaware managed eight hits on the day but stranded seven runners. Dufner and DeCarlo each collected two hits for the Blue Hens. Delaware junior starter Jason Vincent pitched 5.1 innings, allowing just six hits and two earned runs, before being relieved by Rogers in the sixth inning. Rogers, the Delaware High School Player of the Year last season at William Penn High School, was impressive in his debut, allowing just one run and striking out two batters in four innings of work.
