East Carolina 9, Delaware 0 February 17, 2002 Pirates Complete Three-game Sweep with Shutout Kris Dufner led all Blue Hen hitters by going 5 for 15 over the weekend GREENVILLE, NC -- Starting pitcher Davey Penny held University of Delaware hitters to just four hits over seven innings while striking out seven en route to 9-0 shutout victory, completing East Carolina University's three-game series sweep in baseball Sunday afternoon at Harrington Field. The Pirates (3-0), a 2001 NCAA Regional participant, defeated the Blue Hens for the third straight day and fifth time in their last six meetings with Delaware. ECU won Friday's opener 10-6 and posted a 3-2 victory in 10 innings on Saturday. Penny (1-0) stymied the Blue Hen hitters, pitching seven scoreless innings, allowing only four hits and two walks for his first win of the season. Jason Tourangeau and Greg Bunn combined to pitch two perfect innings in relief. Offensively, the Pirates were led by Ryan Jones who went 3 for 5 with three RBI's and Bryant Ward who continued his hitting tear against the Hens, going 3 for 5, scoring two runs, and knocking in three others. For the series, Ward led all hitters with a .615 average (8-13), with two home runs, and six RBI. For the Blue Hens (0-3), starter Mike Mihalik went 4.2 innings allowing eight hits and three earned runs, and while shortstop Kris Dufner hit 2 for 5 for the game and 5 for 15 for the series. Next up for the Blue Hens is a trip to Shreveport, LA for a round-robin tournament with the University of San Diego, California State Northridge, and 16th ranked Oklahoma State. Delaware kicks off the action against San Diego Friday February 22 at 11 a.m. Delaware will then face Cal State Northridge on Saturday and Oklahoma State on Sunday.
