Delaware 3, Furman 1 Coastal Carolina 5, Delaware 1 March 1, 2002 Blue Hens Earn First Win of Season Behind Eitelman and McGuire; Also Fall to Host Coastal Carolina Doug Eitelman hit a two-run triple to highlight the Hens' win over Furman CONWAY, SC -- The University of Delaware baseball team picked up its first win of the season with a 3-1 victory over Furman in the opener then fell to host Coastal Carolina 5-1 in the nightcap in a pair of non-league games Friday at Watson Stadium. The Blue Hens (1-6) will play their third and final game of the three-game set Saturday at 2 p.m. against Coastal Carolina. The Blue Hens were originally scheduled to play Coastal Carolina Sunday in a single game, but that was moved up to Friday night due to the threat of rain Sunday. After losing its first five games of the season to teams earning votes in the NCAA/ABCA Division I Top 25 poll, the Blue Hens finally got on the winning side in the opener as senior Rich McGuire pitched seven strong innings and junior designated hitter Doug Eitelman (Concord HS) hit a two-run triple in the third inning to lead the way. McGuire, Delaware's top pitcher and an All-American candidate, improved to 1-2 as he went seven innings, scattering seven hits and allowing just one run with four strikeouts. He gave way to freshman Jason Rogers in the eighth inning and the 2001 Delaware High School Player of the Year from William Penn High School allowed just one hit over two innings to pick up his first college save. Delaware got all the runs it would need in the third inning when leftfielder Casey Fahy led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a double by rightfielder Reid Gorecki. Eitelman then knocked both in with a triple to right center. The Hens added some insurance with a run in the fifth when centerfielder Steve Van Note doubled home Gorecki, who had led off with a single and stole second base. Furman (4-8), which had eight hits but stranded seven runners, scored its only run in the seventh inning. In the nightcap, Coastal Carolina (9-3) broke open a close game with four runs in the seventh inning to make a winner out of starter Justin Sturge (3-1), who struck out nine batters over eight innings and allowed only a fifth inning single to Nick DeCarlo. The Chanticleers led just 1-0 when leftfielder Jeff Baker belted a three-run double in the seventh off Blue Hen reliever Mike Mihalik to move on to the victory. Delaware starter Jason Vincent (0-1) took the loss despite allowing just four hits and one unearned run in six innings while striking out four batters. Delaware scored its lone run in the ninth inning when third baseman Mark Michael doubled and scored two batters later when shortstop Kris Dufner hit a run-scoring double to centerfield.
