Delaware 7, George Mason 6 April 19, 2002 Blue Hens Hang on to Win Their Seventh Straight Game Steve Harden hit a crucial 3-run HR in the 8th inning FAIRFAX, VA -- Steve Harden hit a three-run home run in the top of the eighth inning and the Unversity of Delaware narrowly escaped out of a George Mason University rally in the bottom half of the inning to hold on for a 7-6 victory in the first of a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series at Raymond H "Hap" Sphuler Field Friday afternoon. Going into the eighth inning with a slim 4-3 lead, third baseman Mark Michael (Gibbstown, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) started off the top half of the inning with a leadoff double, followed by Teddy Puitz (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) who walked. Steve Harden (Wilmington, DE/Dickinson) then lifted his third home run of the season over the leftfield fence, a three-run shot that gave the Blue Hens a 7-3 advantage. The Blue Hen surge chased George Mason starter John Sterling (4-3), a first-year transfer from Delaware State who had entered the game as one of the hottest pitchers in the CAA. Sterling had been 3-0 with a 0.93 earned run average over his last four starts. But the Patriots (21-18, 7-2 CAA) would answer right back in the bottom half of the inning scoring three runs, before reliever Scott Rambo (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) could snuff out the rally retiring the final batter leaving the tying run on third, and winning run on second. Rambo would finish the game, preserving the lead and picking up his first career save. At the plate the Blue Hens were led by Michael who batted 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Reid Gorecki stole a pair of bases and singled in the first inning, to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. Delaware starter Jason Vincent picked up his team-leading fifth victory of the season, allowing 10 hits and four earned runs while striking out three.
