George Mason 14, Delaware 7 April 20, 2002 Patriots blow past Blue Hens with eight-run seventh inning Teddy Puitz led the Blue Hens with three hits and two RBI FAIRFAX, VA -- George Mason University broke out for eight runs and seven hits in a seventh inning rally to pull away and defeat the University of Delaware 14-7 in the second game of the three game Colonial Athletic Association series Saturday afternoon at Raymond H. "Hap" Spuhler Field. The Blue Hens held a 3-1 lead after 5-1/2 innings of play before the Patriots offense came to life scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth, and eight runs in the seventh to give George Mason (22-18, 8-2 CAA) all the cushion they would need to dispose of the Blue Hens, snapping their winning streak at seven games. Senior Teddy Puitz (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville), who played two years for George Mason before transferring to Delaware after the 2000 season, hit his first home run of the year as he finished 3-for-4 with two RBI. Reid Gorecki (East Rockaway, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) also added a pair of hits pushing his current hitting streak to 15 games, the longest by any Blue Hen since Dan Colunio hit safely in 15-straight games in 1997. Evan Howard, Matt Cooksey, and Brian Anderson each contributed home runs during GMU's seventh inning rally, while Mike Taylor batted 4-for-5 with a double, two RBI, and two runs scored. Patriot starting pitcher Chris Murray kept the Blue Hens in check allowing three runs on nine hits through eight innings of work to pick up his fifth victory of the season. Delaware (22-15, 6-4 CAA) will look to take the final game of the series tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. sending senior Rich McGuire (4-3) to mound to face Patriots ace Jake Glanzman (4-1). McGuire stands a good chance of becoming UD's all-time leader in strikeouts in that game, as he needs only three strikeouts to pass Matt Phillips (1995-98) for the top spot.
