James Madison 6, Delaware 4 March 30, 2002 Dukes Even Series Thanks to Game-Ending Double Play Steve Van Note hit his league-leading eighth home run HARRISONBURG, VA -- A day after winning its Colonial Athletic Association debut, the University of Delaware came up short losing to host James Madison University 6-4 in the second game of a three-game conference baseball series Saturday afternoon at Mauck Stadium. Delaware centerfielder Steve Van Note (Brigantine, NJ/Atlantic City) tied the ballgame at one run a piece with his conference leading eighth home run in the top of the fourth inning, but CAA batting leader Eddie Kim answered right back for the Dukes, belting a solo home run of his own, giving JMU a 2-1 lead. JMU (20-7, 1-1 CAA) added three more runs in the fifth inning, giving the Dukes pitching staff enough cushion to put the Blue Hens (13-11, 1-1) away for good and avenge the 12-7 loss in the conference opener to Delaware on Friday. Kim finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Brent Metheny, who recorded three hits in Friday's loss, added two hits and three RBI. Reid Gorecki (East Rockaway, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) and John Schneider (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrenceville) tried to spark a late Blue Hen rally hitting solo home runs in the eighth and ninth innings respectively, but the Dukes were able to bail themselves out in the ninth with a double-play on a rundown that ended the game. James Madison right-hander Chris Cochran pitched eight innings allowing three runs and five hits while striking out seven for his fourth win of the year, and Dan Meyer recorded his first save of the season in relief. Both teams will look to take the advantage in the series Sunday afternoon as Delaware sends sophomore right-hander Mike Mihalik (3-2) to the mound and JMU counters with right-handed junior Jared Doyle (4-1).
