innings) April 24, 2002 Blue Hens Game Two Rally Salvages Twinbill Split
STATE COLLEGE, PA -- After droping the first game of a non-conference doubleheader with Penn State University by a score of 6-2, the University of Delaware rallied to came from behind and win game two 9-8 in 12 innings Wednesday afternoon at Beaver Field. Penn State (15-21) hurlers Kevin Damiano and Tyler Wingerd stymied the Blue Hen hitters holding them to just three hits and two walks, while four different Nittany Lions recorded two hits a piece, led by Chris Wright and Arin Gelletly who each batted 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Reid Gorecki (East Rockaway, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) banged out two of the Blue Hens three hits, and scored a run. Game two was a different story for the Blue Hen offense as they pounded out 19 hits and rallied from three runs down to tie the game in the final inning of regulation. The game remained a stalemate until Joe Kolodzey (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill) scored from third on a double-play groundout. Chris Garrick (Nesconset, NY/Smithtown) then shut down the Lions in the bottom half of the inning, picking up the victory as he pitched six stellar innings in relief allowing just two hits. Teddy Puitz (Pennsvile, NJ/Pennsville) led the offense hitting his second home run of the year and finishing 4-for-6 with two RBI and three runs scored, while Reid Gorecki shined for Delaware once again, finishing the twinbill bill by batting 4-for-4 with two stolen bases, two RBI and one scored in the second game. By hitting safely in both games, Gorecki extended his current hitting-streak to 18 games. Also in game two, senior Casey Fahy (Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) went 3-for-6 with two stolen bases, which puts him at 31 for the season, tied with Andrew Salvo (1999-2001) and Mark Rubini (1984-87) for school record for stolen bases in a season. Delaware (24-16) is back on the road Friday when it travels to Richmond, VA for a Colonial Athletic Association showdown with Virginia Commonwealth. The three-game series begins Friday evening at 7 p.m.
