Delaware 25, Rider 8 March 6, 2002 Blue Hens Bats Explode in 2002 Home Opener Kris Dufner went 2 for 5 with 2 HR's and 6 RBI NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware's offense broke out in a big way in its 2002 home debut, slugging seven home runs, two triples, and four doubles en route to a 25-8 rout over Rider University Wednesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium. The Blue Hens (2-7) more than doubled their highest offensive output of the season, collecting 22 hits and scoring 25 runs, the most since tallying 29 runs against Rider on April 16, 1997. The seven home runs were also the most hit since hitting seven against Richmond exactly three years ago on March 6, 1998. Shortstop Kris Dufner (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) kicked off the Blue Hen hit parade in the bottom of the first inning, hitting the first of his two home runs on the day, a three-run shot that put the Hens up 3-1. Reid Gorecki (East Rockaway, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) followed in the second inning with his first career grand slam. Dufner finished the day batting 2 for 5 with two runs and six RBI, while Reid Gorecki went 1 for 2 with two walks, four runs, and four RBI to go with his second home run of the season. After surrendering a leadoff home run to Erinn Pesaresi, starting pitcher Mike Mihalik (1-2) settled down and held the Broncs (0-1) to just three hits over five innings striking out eight until pitching into a jam in the sixth inning. After giving up a one-out grand slam to Carl Loadenthal, Mihalik gave way to Ryan Dulaney (Annapolis, MD/Riverdale Baptist), who came on to pitch 2 2/3 stellar innings of relief. Every Blue Hen batter that came to the plate during the game reached base safely at least once and Teddy Puitz, who was hit by a pitch in the eighth inning in his only at bat of the game, was the only hitter in the Delaware lineup who did not get a hit during the contest. Also for the Blue Hens, Steve Harden (Wilmington, DE/Dickinson) hit a double and a triple while scoring three runs, Casey Fahy (Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) was 2-3 with a double, three runs and three RBI, and Steve Van Note (Brigantine, NJ/Atlantic City) collected three hits and scored two runs. The Blue Hens will be back in action Friday when they host Delaware State in a battle for state bragging rights at Bob Hannah Stadium.
