March 27, 2002 Broncs Get Out to Fast Start and Roll Past Hens
LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ -- The University of Delaware saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end as Rider University scored 12 runs in the first three innings to blow past Delaware by the score of 14-4 in non-conference baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Richard P. Daly Field. Carl Loadenthal capped off a five-run first inning with a two-run home run and Kevin Riley added a two-run shot of his own to highlight a six-run third inning, giving the Broncs (8-7) a comfortable 12-0 lead after just three innings of play. Riley, a senior leftfielder, torched the Blue Hens (12-10) by going 3-for-5 with five RBI, and adding two doubles to go along with the two-run homer in the third inning. Nick DeCarlo (Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley) went 2-for-4 with a double, one RBI and one run scored, while Lawrenceville, NJ native John Schneider (Lawrenceville HS) batted 1-for-2 with an RBI double in his return home. Kris Dufner (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) also added a pair of hits, making it four-straight games in which he he has recorded two or more hits. Dufner is batting 11-for-15 over that stretch On the mound, Broncs starting pitcher Eric Weiner picked up the victory allowing four runs and six hits on seven innings, while freshman Chris Garrick, who was making his first career start for Delaware, struggled allowing 12 runs on eight hits in 2 2/3 innings of work. The Blue Hens will be playing their first conference action of the season, and first ever baseball game as a member of the Colonial Athletic Association, this weekend, as they travel down Harrisonburg, VA to meet James Madison. The three-game set begins Friday at 3 p.m.
