Rutgers 12, Delaware 8 April 30, 2002 Blue Hens Can't Overcome Quick Start by Scarlet Knights Reid Gorecki hit a two run homer for the Blue Hens NEWARK, DE -- Rutgers University jumped out to a five run lead and staved off a late rally to defeat the University of Delaware 12-8 in non-conference baseball action at Bob Hannah Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. The Scarlet Knights (27-16) wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning as Val Majewski followed Nick Cerulo's leadoff walk by sending a Mike Mihalik (Allentown, PA/Parkland) offering over the rightfield wall. Rutgers would tack on three more runs in the in the third inning as Scarlet Knight hitters took advantage of the windy weather conditions to pound out a total of seven extra base hits. Delaware (27-17), who managed to bang out five extra base hits of their own, threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth inning rallying to score two runs, and put the tying run in the on-deck circle. But Rutgers relief pitcher Ryan Molchan entered the game and squashed any hope for a Blue Hens comeback by retiring all three batters he faced to close the game. Leadoff hitter Casey Fahy (Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) sparked the Delaware offense going 3-for-5 with a two-run triple, two runs scored, and one steal, while Reid Gorecki (East Rockaway, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) belted his ninth home run of the year, a two-run shot, to go along with a double, a single and two more RBI. Gorecki also runs his hitting-streak to 22 games, which is tied for the third longest hitting-streak in school history. Kris Dufner (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) and Mark Michael (Gibbstown, NJ.Gloucester Catholic) also chipped in with a pair of hits each for Delaware. Leading the way for the Scarlet Knights, Tim Sweeney finished 4-for-5 with a solo home run, a double, three runs scored and four RBI, while Ryan Lillis went 3-for-3 with two doubles, three RBI, and two runs scored. The Blue Hens will be back in action again tomorrow as they meet Delaware State fifth time this season, as the two teamsface-off in a doubleheader at Soldier Field in Dover, DE.
