Delaware 17, Temple 6 April 16, 2002 Blue Hens Win Sixth Liberty Bell Classic Title Reid Gorecki was named the MVP of the Liberty Bell PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Delaware captured its sixth Liberty Bell College Baseball Classic title by defeating Temple University 17-6 in the tournament final at Veterans Stadium Tuesday night. Tournament MVP Reid Gorecki (East Rockaway, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) set the tone for a high powered Blue Hen offense early in the first inning ripping an RBI double, then scoring on a throwing error committed during Gorecki's attempt at stealing third base. Gorecki, who batted 4-for-4 in the tournament semi-final victory over Saint Joseph's, finished the night 3-for-6 with three RBI, three runs scored, and two stolen bases. Nick DeCarlo (Glen Mills, PA/Garnet Valley) also added a 2-for-5 effort at the plate, smashing a three-run home run that capped off a nine-run fifth inning rally, while Mark Michael (Gibbstown, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) hit his fifth home run of the year, a towering two-run shot that sailed over the 371 ft. mark in left-centerfield. Despite only being outhit 11-10, the Owls (11-18) dug themselves into a hole by committing five costly errors and walking seven batters. Jerome Lopez and Keith Ramsey sparked the Temple offense, as they both went 2-for-4 with a home run and Joe Lyall also chipped in with a pair of doubles. The victory marks the second consecutive Liberty Bell title for the Blue Hens, both won against Temple, and sixth overall in the history of the 11 year old tournament. Delaware has also reached the 20-win plateau for the 30th consecutive season in the program's history.
