Delaware 5, UNC Wilmington 1 April 6, 2002 McGuire Pitches Blue Hens to Conference Victory Rich McGuire pitched 8 1/3 innings for his third win of the year NEWARK, DE -- After surrendering 20 runs and 22 hits in a lopsided defeat to UNC Wilmington on Friday, the University of Delaware rebounded Saturday afternoon behind a strong pitching performance from Rich McGuire to down the Seahawks 5-1, snapping their seven-game winning streak, in the second of a three-game Colonial Athletic Association baseball series at Bob Hannah Stadium. Senior Rich McGuire (Wantagh, NY/Gen.Douglas MaCathur) picked up his third victory of the season finishing just two outs shy of his 25th career complete game, as he tamed the red-hot hitting Seahawks allowing just one run, five hits and five walks to go with four strikeouts over 8-1/3 innings. Reliever Steve Harden (Wilmington, DE/Dickinson) came on to retire the final two batters, picking up his second save of the year. UNCW (20-8, 4-1 CAA) got on the board in the second inning as Matt Wright, who led off the inning with a single, came around to score on a Jason Schindler sacrifice fly. Baserunning errors would cost UNCW a scoring opportunity in the fifth inning as Blue Hen right fielder Doug Eitelman tracked down a bases-loaded liner off of Kiley Vaughn's bat, then fired to the infield to double off Russ Simmerman to end the inning. Jason Schindler, who was on third, would have scored on the sac fly, but it was ruled that he left the bag before the catch, and the Seahawks came away empty-handed. At the plate for Delaware (15-13, 2-2 CAA), Mark Michael (Gibbstown, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) batted 2-for3 with two RBI and a run scored, while John Schneider (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrenceville) hooked a line drive inside the leftfield foul pole for his fourth home run of the season. Also Reid Gorecki (East Rockaway, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) scored on a wild pitch after hitting his third triple, extending his hitting streak to six games. Seahawks starting pitcher Jake Mullis was saddled with his second loss of the season going 6-2/3 innings, as he gave up five runs on seven hits, while striking out six and walking two.
