April 26, 2002 Blue Hens topple First-place Rams behind strong pitching performance
RICHMOND, VA -- The University of Delaware rallied for four runs in the fifth inning and starter Jason Vincent pitched six scoreless innings as the Blue Hens toppled first-place Virginia Commonwealth University 6-4 in the opening game of a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series at The Diamond on Friday evening. After surrendering four runs and six hits over the second and third innings, Delaware hurler Jason Vincent (Seaford, DE/Seaford) settled into a groove and shut the Rams out over the final six innings allowing just four hits, as he picked up his fourth complete game victory of the season, running his record to 6-2 overall. Delaware (25-16, 7-4 CAA) erased a two-run VCU lead in the fifth inning after Steve Van Note (Brigantine, NJ/Atlantic City) tied the ballgame with a two-run bases-loaded single, and Kris Dufner (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) scored the go-ahead run from third on a fielding error. One batter later, Van Note would give the Blue Hens a two-run cushion, scoring on Doug Eitelman's (Wilmington, DE/Concord) infield groundout. Eitelman keyed the Blue Hens offense finishing the game 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored, and Mark Michael (Gibbstown, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) chipped in three hits and an RBI as well. Junior Reid Gorecki (East Rockaway, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) singled in his first at-bat of the game, extending his hitting-streak to 19 games. For the Rams (29-15, 10-3 CAA), Matt Davis went 2-for-5 with a two-run triple and Joe Jackson added three hits and an RBI. Both teams will meet again tomorrow for the second of their three-game conference series set to begin at 4 p.m.
