Delaware 6, Virginia Commonwealth 5 April 27, 2002 Blue Hens Rally in Ninth Inning for Comeback Victory Kris Dufner knocked in the game-winning run RICHMOND, VA -- Kris Dufner singled home Steve Van Note with the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning and the University of Delaware held on for a 6-5 victory over Virginia Commonwealth University in a crucial Colonial Athletic Association game at The Diamond on Saturday afternoon. After quickly falling behind 5-0 after two innings, the Blue Hens chopped away at VCU's lead, capitalizing on five Ram errors to score two runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth. Reid Gorecki (East Rockaway, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) led off the ninth inning rally with a single, then advanced to second on Steve Van Note's (Brigantine, NJ/Atalntic City) walk. Gorecki and Van Note then pulled off a double-steal, putting Gorecki into postion to tie the ballgame on John Schneider's (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrenceville) sacrifice fly. One batter later, Kris Dufner (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) plated Van Note with the winning-run on a single up the middle. Gorecki led the Blue Hens (26-16, 8-4 CAA) with three hits and three stolen bases, extending his hitting streak to 20 games, while Schneider and Dufner each recorded a pair of hits, and Mark Michael (Gibbstown, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) chipped in with a single and two RBI. After giving up five runs on five hits over the first two innings, Delaware starting pitcher Jason Rogers (New Castle, DE/William Penn) settled down and shut the door on the Rams allowing just hits over the next five innings, finishing with two earned runs and nine strikeouts over seven innings of work. Scott Rambo (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) came on to pitch the eight inning, picking up the decision, and Steve Harden (Wilmington, Dickinson) held the Rams in the ninth to pick up his third save of the season. Offensively for VCU (29-16, 10-4 CAA) Nick Jones batted 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI, and Matt Davis added two hits to go with two runs scored.
