Blue Hens Complete
Series Sweep of Rams
Steve
Harden was key for the Blue Hens at the plate, and
on the mound.
|
RICHMOND, VA -- The University of
Delaware overcame a late-seventh inning rally from Virginia
Commonwealth University and prevailed 13-8, sweeping the
three-game Colonial Athletic Association series Sunday
afternoon at The Diamond.
Delaware (27-16, 9-4 CAA) jumped out to a
6-1 advantage after Kris Dufner (Philadelphia, PA/Father
Judge) capped off a four-run sixth inning with a two-run
triple.
But VCU (29-17, 10-5 CAA) answered right
back in the bottom half of the inning as the Blue Hens put
the first three batters in on base then served up a grand
slam to Bryan Gillespie. The Rams rounded out a seven-run
scoring spree taking the lead as Chris Gerrity slapped a
two-run double, then scored on teammate Jose Pabon's
triple.
That lead would not stand for very long
as sophomore Mark Michael (Gibbstown, NJ/Gloucester
Catholic) led off the Blue Hens half of the seventh
inning with a single, and Steve Harden (Wilmington,
DE/Dickinson) followed by hitting his fourth home run of
the season, a two-run shot that tied the ballgame at 8-8.
The next batter, Casey Fahy (Clayton, NJ/Gloucester
Catholic), tripled, than scored the go-ahead run on a
single by Brock Donovan (New Castle, DE/William
Penn).
In the ninth inning, Teddy Puitz
(Pennsville, NJPennsville) hit a two-run home run in his
only at-bat of the game, as Delaware cushioned its lead
scoring four runs in the final stanza.
Five different Blue Hen batters recorded
two or more hits in the game led by Kris Dufner who went
2-for-4 with a triple and four RBI, and Steve Harden who
finished 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, and three
RBI.
Reid Gorecki (East Rockaway,
NY/Kellenberg Memorial) ran his current hitting-streak
to 21 games by going 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
Gorecki's streak is the longest by any Blue Hen since Brian
Wallace (1991-94) batted safely in 21 straight games for
Delaware in 1992.
Scott Rambo (Downingtown,
PA/Downingtown) got the winning decision for the second
straight game pitching 2-1/3 innings in relief, while Harden
added to his heroics at the plate, picking up his fourth
save of the season pitching 1-1/3 scoreless innings to close
out the game, giving Delaware it's second conference series
sweep of the season, and a first-place share of the Colonial
Division with a 4-1 divisional record.
The Blue Hens will return home to face
Rutgers University at Bob Hannah Stadium on Tuesday
afternoon starting at 3 p.m. That game will also be telecast
on Philadelphia cable channel CN8.
