Delaware 14, Villanova 6 May 15, 2002 Blue Hens Close Regular Season with Win Brock Donovan finished 3-for-5 with a two-run home run NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware baseball team erupted for 14 runs on 18 hits to close out the regular season by dropping regional rival Villanova University 14-6 at Bob Hannah Stadium Wednesday afternoon. The Blue Hens (34-20) broke a 3-3 tie in fourth inning as Casey Fahy (Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) led off with a single, then stole second and third base to put him position to score on a sacrifice fly by Reid Gorecki (East Rockaway, NY/Kellenberg Memorial). Mark Michael (Gibbstown, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) and John Schneider (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrenceville) followed later that inning with back-to-back RBI doubles, and Delaware jumped out to five run advantage. Delaware would pad it's lead adding two-run home runs by Reid Gorecki and Brock Donovan (New Castle, DE/William Penn), and a solo shot by Steve Van Note (Brigantine, NJ/Atlantic City). Van Note and Donovan each finished with three hits a piece and Reid Gorecki added a double and two stolen bases to go with his team-high 12th home run of the season, while Doug Eitelman (Wilmington, DE/Concord) batted 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. For the Wildcats (28-22), Chris Graziano went 3-for-5 with a double and Brian Newbold added a two-run double. Rob Cafiero, Brendan Mannix, and Brian Trotta also contributed two hits a piece in the effort. Ryan Dulaney (Annapolis, MD/Riverdale) picked up his third straight victory as starter, running his record to a perfect 5-0 going five innings, while Chris Garrick, Scott Rambo, and Steve Harden combined to finish the game with four scoreless innings in relief. Villanova freshman Nick Allen (6-1) was saddled with his first loss of the season. The victory was the 20th win at home for the Blue Hens this season, making it the eighth season since 1983 in which Delaware has recorded 20-or-more victories at Hannah Stadium.
