Delaware 19, Wilmington College 5 April 17, 2002 Blue Hens Erupt for 11 Runs in Fifth Inning Reid Gorecki's 7 RBI was two short of the Blue Hens single-game record for RBI in a game NEWARK, DE -- After being held to just one run and four hits through the first four innings, the University of Delaware erupted for 11 runs in the fifth inning and five more in the sixth en route to a lopsided 19-5 victory over neighboring Wilmington College Wednesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium. Up 4-1 in the fifth inning, Wilmington College (16-29) found themselves in trouble after pitcher Bob Lougheend walked the bases full, then Lougheed and reliever Chris Cannatelli forced in two runs by plunking the next two batters, pulling the Blue Hens within a run. The next batter John Schneider (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrenceville) prompty delivered a a two-run single kicking off a six-hit 11-run rally that ended shortly after Reid Gorecki (East Rockaway, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) blasted a three-run home run, the first of his two home runs on the game. Gorecki would finish the game 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a team-high seven RBI, which is two short of the team record set by John Strode in 1961, and the most recorded by a Blue Hen in a game since Kevin Mench had eight RBI against Holy Cross on March 14, 1998. Gorecki also extends his current hitting streak to a Delaware season-high 13 games. Also for the Blue Hens (21-14) Mark Michael (Gibbstown, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) homered for the second consecutive game as he batted 4-for-5 with three RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base, while Teddy Puitz (Pennsville,NJ/Pennsville) added a pair of hits to go with a walk and three runs scored. Kevin Murphy went 3-for-4 with three doubles, and Ryan Husfelt chipped in two hits, an RBI, and a runs scored for the Wildcats.
