Coastal Carolina 6, Delaware 0 February 21, 2003 Blue Hens manage only three hits in Opening Day Loss CONWAY, SC -- The University of Delaware baseball team was limited to just three hits and lost its season opener, 6-0, at Coastal Carolina Friday afternoon at Charles Watson Stadium. Coastal opened the scoring in the bottom half of the first inning when Tyler Hasbrouck doubled down the left field line, scoring Brett Grandstrand, who also doubled. Coastal tacked on three more in the second and Jeremiah Grove added a solo home run in the sixth to extend their lead to 5-0. Kris Dufner, Steve Van Note and Mark Michael each went 1-for-3 with a single for Delaware (0-1). Jason Rogers pitched five innings, scattering eight hits, allowing two earned runs while striking out two batters. Mitch Heckert pitched three innings of relief work, allowing two hits and one earned run. Steven Carter picked up the win, limiting the Blue Hens to only two hits over 7.0 innings of work while striking out eight. Carter pitched four perfect innings until Van Note opened the top of the fifth inning with a single to left-field. Coastal Carolina (6-1) head coach Gary Gilmore picked up his 500th career win. The second game of a three game series continues tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 12 noon, one hour earlier than scheduled due to the chance of inclement weather on Saturday afternoon.
