Blue Hens Pick Up
First Win of 2003, Split Doubleheader
PETERSBURG, VA -- University of
Delaware senior Steve Harden and junior Mark
Michael each drove in four runs and sophomore pitcher
Scott Rambo pitched a complete game, eight hitter as
the Blue Hens picked up their first win of the 2003
campaign, knocking off Delaware State in non-conference
baseball action Sunday afternoon, 10-3, to salvage a split
in a doubleheader played at the Petersburg Sports Complex in
Petersburg, VA.
Delaware State (5-11) opened the
doubleheader with a 4-3 over the Blue Hens.
Rambo did not walk a batter while
striking out six Hornets en route to helping Delaware snap
its eight-game losing skid to start the season.
Junior Steve Van Note smacked his
second home run of the day, while freshman Brian Valichka
and sophomore Brock Donovan scored three runs for
Delaware. Delaware State was led by Scott Martin, who drove
in two runs.
In the opener, the University of Delaware
took a 3-2 lead into the top of the seventh, but the Hornets
rallied for two runs to take a 4-3 lead. Kevin Lowe then
came in to pitch the bottom half of the inning for the
Hornets and struck out two Blue Hens to pick up the save.
Martin knocked in two runs for the Hornets and Matt Folke
also added an RBI.
Van Note blasted a solo home run and S.
Harden knocked in an RBI for the Blue Hens, while Michael
added two hits and seniors Kris Dufner and Nick
DeCarlo also smacked hits. Senior Jason Vincent
started and pitched 4.1 innings, allowing one run on six
hits, striking out 10. Chris Garrick took the loss
for the Blue Hens, allowing three runs and three hits in 2.2
innings pitched.
The Blue Hens (1-8) return to action
Wednesday when they host Quinnipiac at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
