Eight runs in ninth
inning gives Hens doubleheader split with Delaware
State
DOVER, DE -- The University of
Delaware broke open a scoreless game with eight runs in the
top of the ninth inning and would go on to a 8-0 win in the
first game of a doubleheader with in-state rival Delaware
State today at Soldier Field in Dover, DE. The Hornets
returned the favor with a shutout of their own in the second
game, allowing only three hits for a 3-0 victory.
Junior Mike Mihalik (Allentown,
PA) went 8.0 innings, scattering seven hits and struck
out nine to pick up the win in the first game. The game,
which was scheduled for seven innings, went scoreless until
the ninth inning when the Blue Hens sent 13 men to the
plate, scoring eight times on five hits and one Delaware
State error.
Sophomore Brock Donovan (New Castle,
DE) scored the winning run when senior Steve Harden's
(Wilmington, DE) ground ball was not fielded cleanly by
the Hornets shortstop and he would compound the problem with
a throwing error that brought Donovan all the way around
from second base with the game deciding run.
Junior Steve Van Note (Brigantine,
NJ) followed two batters later with a three-run homer to
left-center field giving the Hens a comfortable 5-0 lead.
Donovan would bat for a second time in the inning and
doubled to right field scoring two to cap the game's
scoring.
Van Note finished 1-for-4 with three RBI
while Donovan went 2-for-5 with two doubles, a run scored
and two RBI.
Garrett Weir had three of the seven
Delaware State (8-16) hits in the first game with Scott
Martin going 2-for-4.
In the nightcap, Tim Vaillancourt limited
the Hens to three hits and stuck out four batters. Delaware
has now been shutout three times this season. Buster Hammond
and Cory Cooper each drove in a run for the
Hornets.
Senior Ryan Dulaney (Annapolis,
MD) took the loss, allowing five hits, three runs (one
earned) and struck out four batters. Senior Doug Eitelman
(Wilmington, DE) had a pinch-hit double in the sixth
while freshman Todd Davison (Somers Point, NJ) and
Donovan each had a single for the Hens.
The Blue Hens (5-10) return to action
tomorrow when they host Monmouth University at Bob Hannah
Stadium. First game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
