Delaware State 4, Delaware 1 April 17, 2003 Hornets win first ever season series over Blue Hens WILMINGTON, DE -- Tim Vaillancourt pitched 6.2 no-hit innings and struck out a career-best 14 batters to lead Delaware State to a 4-1 win over the University of Delaware tonight at Frawley Stadium, and in the process gave the Hornets their first season series win over the Blue Hens by winning four of the six games played in 2003. Vaillancourt went 8.2 innings giving up only two hits and one unearned run. He walked eight batters but only one after the third inning as he threw over 150 pitches in his outing. Vaillancourt (4-3) has not given up an earned run over his last 15.2 innings against Delaware. He blanked the Hens 3-0 in the second game of a doubleheader back on March 18 in Dover, giving up only three hits that afternoon. Junior righthander Mark Michael (2-2) posted a career-high 11 strikeouts over 5.0 innings in the loss for Delaware. Kevin Hill and Norris Gordon each lined RBI singles up the middle in the second to put Delaware State (19-20) up for good 2-1. The Blue Hens scratched a run across in the top half of the second on a bases loaded walk by senior shortstop Kris Dufner. The walk was the 100th of his career. Freshman third baseman Brent Rogers broke up the no-hit bid with a single up the middle with two outs in the seventh inning, Delaware was able to get the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning but Rogers was struck out by Kevin Long for his second save of the season The Blue Hens (12-22) return to action tomorrow when they host conference rival George Mason at Bob Hannah Stadium.
