East Carolina 7, Delaware 5 February 28, 2003 Kris Dufner has one hit in each of the four games this season GREENVILLE, NC -- East Carolina took advantage of two Delaware fielding errors and would score the winning run on a suicide squeeze bunt in the eighth inning as the Blue Hens suffered their fourth straight loss to open the season, 7-5, on a cold afternoon at Harrington field in Greenville, NC. Delaware (0-4) trailed early for the fourth straight game when East Carolina shortstop Luke Cherry ripped an RBI double to left center field, giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead in the second inning. The Delaware bats came alive in the sixth inning when sophomore left fielder Brock Donovan tied the game 1-1 on a sacrifice fly, scoring junior center fielder Steve Van Note, who reached on a fielder's choice. Senior right fielder Doug Eitelman followed with an RBI single, his team-leading fourth of the season, to give the Hens their first lead of the 2003 season, 2-1. Senior first baseman Steve Harden capped the inning off with a double down the left field line scoring two as Delaware led 4-1. The Pirates (6-3) got a run back in the bottom of the sixth on a solo home run by Darryl Lawhorn to make the score 4-2. In the seventh, Mike Mihalik replaced Delaware starter Jason Rogers. With two outs Jamie Paige's grounder was not handled by the Blue Hen's infield which proved to be costly. The Pirates took advantage as Ryan Jones singled in a run and two batters later Ryan Norwood singled through the left side scoring two runs and giving East Carolina a 5-4 lead. The resilient Hens would answer back in the top of the eighth as senior third baseman Kris Dufner led of with a solo home run to left center to square the game at 5-5, but the Pirates had an answer of their own in the bottom of the eighth. Mark Minicozzi doubled to right field to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a bunt single. Cherry stepped up and dropped down a squeeze bunt, scoring Minicozzi with the winning run. The Pirates tacked on one final run on a throwing error by the Hens to go ahead 7-5. Dufner finished the day 2-for-4 with two runs scored and his first home run of the season. He has now hit safely in each of the four games this season. Harden went 1-for-4 with two RBI while Donovan and Eitelman each drove in one run apiece. Mihalik (0-1) suffered the loss while Matt Bishop (3-0) picks up the win in relief. Greg Bunn pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season. The weekend series continues tomorrow with the second game of a three game weekend series. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
