East Carolina 14, Delaware 3 March 2, 2003 East Carolina sweeps weekend series with Delaware, Blue Hens fall to 0-6 GREENVILLE, NC -- East Carolina completed a three-game weekend series sweep of the University of Delaware baseball team with a 14-3 victory Sunday afternoon at Harrington Field in Greenville, NC. The Hens are now 0-6 on the season while the Pirates improve to 8-3. Delaware took an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single by senior left fielder Nick DeCarlo in the second inning. DeCarlo leads the team with a .375 (6-for-16) batting average through six games. The lead was cut short as ECU took advantage of Delaware starter Mark Michael's control problems to take a 5-1 lead in the third. The Pirates sent 11 men to the plate and had four hits, including RBI singles from Mark Minicozzi and Jake Smith. Michael did not help his cause by hitting two batters, both with the bases loaded, and walked two batters. The Hens cut the lead to 5-2, on an unearned run in the top of the fifth. Red-shirt freshman designated hitter Daryl Holcomb reached on a two-out single, took second when senior third baseman Kris Dufner's grounder was thrown errantly by the Pirates, and then scored on an infield single by junior center fielder Steve Van Note. The Pirates blew the game open in the bottom of the frame, tallying six runs on five hits to lead 11-2 and would go on to their fourth straight win and fifth in their last six games Delaware scored its final run in the ninth on an RBI groundout by freshman shortstop Todd Davison. Senior first baseman Steve Harden went 2-for-4 on the afternoon while senior right fielder Doug Eitelman was 1-for-4 with a run scored. Ashley Capps, making his first start of the season, pitched five innings, allowing six hits and one earned run to garner his second victory of the year. Michael failed to get out of the third inning as he suffered his first loss of the season. Michael went 2.2 innings, allowing five hits and five earned runs with one strikeout. Delaware is scheduled to visit Rider on Wednesday in Lawrenceville, NJ.
