NEWARK, DE -- Senior shortstop
Kris Dufner hit a three-run walk-off homer in the
bottom of the ninth inning to give the University of
Delaware a 7-6 win over George Mason in the first game of a
Colonial Athletic Association baseball doubleheader today at
Bob Hannah Stadium. The Patriots jumped out early in game
two with 10 runs in the first inning and cruised to a 14-1
victory.
George Mason held a 6-3 lead heading to
the bottom of the ninth when freshman third baseman Brent
Rogers ripped a one out RBI single to cut the Blue Hen
deficit to 6-4 with Dufner to follow. Stacen Gant was then
called on to pitch and Dufner proceeded to smack Gant's
first offering over the right-center field wall for his
fifth homerun of the season. Dufner went 3-for-5 with two
runs scored and three RBI.
Senior designated hitter Nick
DeCarlo gave the Hens a 2-1 lead on a two-run shot, his
first homer of the season, in the second inning.
The Patriots would go ahead 3-2 in the
sixth when Delaware center fielder Steve Van Note
dropped a fly ball in left-center field that brought in two
unearned runs. Van Note was able to get a run back for his
club with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning to tie
the game 3-3. Van Note and DeCarlo each had two hits in the
game.
Nick Shimer put George Mason (23-11, 8-2
CAA) ahead in the eighth on an RBI single. The Patriots
would tack on two more unearned runs in the inning to hold a
a 6-3 advantage.
The loss in game one snapped George
Mason's school-record winning streak of 11 games. Sophomore
righty Chris Garrick pitched a scoreless ninth to
pick up the win, his first in 2003.
In the nightcap, John Sterling, a native
of nearby Middletown, DE and a product of Caravel Academy,
scattered six hits over 7.0 innings to improve his record to
6-2 on the year. He also walked one and struck out
one.
George Mason sent 14 men to the plate
scoring 10 runs in the top half of the first inning to hold
firm control of game two. Chris Looze knocked in two runs on
a single through the left side of the infield for the
innings first two runs while Looze also brought the innings
final run in on a sac fly to center field for three RBI in
the inning. Looze has hit safely in 16 straight games and
went 2-for-3 with five RBI in the nightcap.
Shimer smacked one of his three hits in
game two for a two-run homer in the fifth. Jeff Palumbo went
3-for-4 with three runs scored while Evan Howard had two
hits and three runs scored.
Van Note and sophomore left fielder
Brock Donovan each went 2-for-3 in game two for
Delaware.
The Blue Hens (13-23, 3-7 CAA) return to
action tomorrow when they host George Mason at Bob Hannah
Stadium. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
