Monmouth 8, Delaware 6 March 19, 2003 St. Martine three-run blast leads Monmouth over Delaware NEWARK, DE -- Monmouth University pounded out three home runs and the University of Delaware committed five fielding errors as the Hawks picked up the 8-6 non-league baseball win today at Bob Hannah Stadium. With the game tied 5-5 in the eighth inning Mike St. Martine drilled an opposite field three-run homer to left-center field for which proved to be the game winner for Monmouth (2-9). Delaware, which trailed 2-0 on a Fran Rotella two-run homer in the first, tied the game in the second on back-to-back RBI doubles by junior Mark Michael (Gibbstown, NJ) and sophomore Brock Donovan (New Castle, DE). Teams traded single runs in the fourth and fifth innings before the Hawks took a 5-4 lead on an errant pick off throw by Michael in the sixth, plating Jon Lewis, who reached on an error earlier in the inning. The Hens tied the game at 5-5 in the seventh on a bases loaded walk by pinch hitter senior Matt Wimer (Quarryville, PA). After the St. Martine homer in the eighth, the Hens got a run back in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by senior Kris Dufner (Philadelphia, PA) with two outs, but winning pitcher Joe Cummings (1-0) got senior Steve Harden (Wilmington, DE) to ground into a fielder's choice to end any thoughts of a Delaware rally. Cummings gave up an earned run over 1.1 innings of relief work. Mike Kelly mowed the Hens down 1-2-3 in the ninth inning, including two strikeouts, to pick up his first save of the season. Dufner went 3-for-5 with two RBI while junior Steve Van Note (Brigantine, NJ) and Michael each had two hits apiece. Sophomore Scott Rambo (Downingtown, PA) took the loss, evening his record to 2-2 on the season. Freshman Mitch Heckert (Harrisburg,PA) made his first career start at Delaware and pitched 4.0 innings, allowing three runs with four strikeouts. Rotella led the Monmouth charge with two hits and three RBI. Lance Koenig and Kelly each went 2-for-4. The Blue Hens (5-11) return to action Saturday when they host Penn State University at Bob Hannah Stadium.
