March 12, 2003 Dufner rips homer,
Michael pitches five strong innings to lead Delaware over
Quinnipiac NEWARK, DE -- Senior Nick DeCarlo and freshman Brent Rogers each went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the University of Delaware baseball team to a 7-3 win over visiting Quinnipiac College Wednesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium. Delaware scored two unearned runs, without the luxury of a hit, in the first inning to go up 2-0 and would tack on two more in each of the next two innings to hold a 6-0 lead after three innings. Rogers got his first collegiate hit in the second inning when he drove the ball to right field for a double, scoring DeCarlo, who came all the way around from first base after he was hit with a pitch to lead off the inning. Freshman Todd Davison followed with a single to score Rogers for a 4-0 lead. Senior Kris Dufner led off the third inning with his team-leading third home run of the season. He smacked a shot down the right field line that just cleared the outfield wall for a 5-0 Blue Hen lead. DeCarlo added an RBI double later in the inning. Quinnipiac (0-4) responded with three runs in the fifth to cut the lead to 6-3. Brian Magee doubled in Keith Avery with their first run of the inning. Charles D'Elia followed with an RBI single to score Magee. D'Elia would score on a Delaware error to cap the scoring for the Bobcats. D'Elia finished the day 3-for-5 while Magee and Kevin MacIlvane each had two hits apiece. Junior Mark Michael pitched well for Delaware, allowing three hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out five to pick up his first win of the season, and even his record to 1-1. Freshman Mitch Heckert went 4.0 strong innings, only allowing three hits to garner his first career save. Dufner finished the day 1-for-2 with two runs scored, two stolen bases and his 18th career homer at Delaware. Davison went 1-for-5 with a run scored and two stolen bases. The Blue Hens (2-8) return to action Thursday when they host George Washington at Bob Hannah Stadium. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
