Blue Hens drop
fifth straight, this time in extra
innings
LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ -- Carl
Loadenthal hit a walk-off grandslam in the bottom of the
11th inning to give Rider University a 9-8 win over the
University of Delaware in a non-league baseball game today
at Daly Field in Lawrenceville, NJ. The Blue Hens have now
dropped five straight and fall to 9-19 on the year while the
Broncs improve to 9-12 this season.
With the game tied 5-5 heading to the top
half of the 11th inning, freshman third baseman Brent
Rogers singled in two runs to cap a three run inning
that gave Delaware an 8-5 lead heading to the bottom half of
the inning where Loadenthal blasted his game-winning
shot.
Sophomore second baseman Brock
Donovan put the Hens up 2-1 in the second as he drove in
two with a single to right center.
Rogers led off the eighth inning with
solo homer, his first at Delaware, to give Delaware a 5-4
advantage but the Broncs would tie the game 5-5 in the
bottom half of the inning on a RBI groundout by Steve
Sciaraffo. Each team put a runner on in the ninth but were
unable to score the winning run in regulation sending the
game to extra frames.
Delaware senior catcher Matt Wimer
smacked a one-out double to right center in the 10th inning
but Eric Weiner, the last of seven RIder pitchers, got the
next two batters to ground out to end the inning. In the
bottom of the 11th, sophomore righty Chris Garrick
(0-2) struck out Sciaraffo to lead off the inning. From
there he allowed three straight singles to load the bases
with Loadenthal heading to the plate.
Todd Davison, Kris Dufner,
Steve Van Note, Steve Harden and Rogers
each had two of the 16 Delaware hits.
Junior righty Mark Michael started
for the Hens and went 7.0 innings allowing four runs (three
earned) on five hits and struck out three.
The Blue Hens (9-19) begin a three-game
weekend series tomorrow at Colonial Athletic Association
rival Towson at 3 p.m.
