Delaware 3, Rutgers 2 May 15, 2003 Delaware wraps up 2003 season with 3-2 win over No. 22 Rutgers PISCATAWAY, NJ - The University of Delaware baseball team wrapped up its 2003 season with a 3-2 win over No. 22 Rutgers University today at Class of '53 Complex in Piscataway, NJ. The victory gives the Hens' three straight wins for the first time since back on March 14-18 and finish the season with a record of 21-32 while the Scarlet Knights fall to 30-17. Sophomore second baseman Brock Donovan singled in freshman shortstop Todd Davison with the games deciding run in the seventh inning putting the Blue Hens up 3-1. Rutgers was able to get a run back in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to one but sophomore righty Chris Garrick came on in the eighth and pitched two shutout innings to register his third save of the year. Senior righty Ryan Dulaney (4-1) pitched 3.0 innings in relief of starter Mark Michael to pick up the victory. Dulaney struck out five batters and allowed one run while Michael went the first 4.0 innings allowing only two hits and one run while striking out three. The Scarlet Knights pushed across a run in the first to lead 1-0 but freshman catcher Brian Valichka evened the score at 1-1 in the third when he singled in sophomore centerfielder Dave Harden, who reached on a single to right field and stole second base. Valichka put Delaware ahead in the fifth as he plated Dave Harden with a fielder's choice as the Hens' led 2-1. Rutgers entered today having won 18 of its last 20 games and are currently second in the Big East Conference, a half game behind first-place West Virginia. Dave Harden went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases while Valichka was 1-for-2 with a run scored and two RBI. Senior first baseman Steve Harden was the unquestionable leader this season for Delaware pacing the club in hitting (.302), doubles (16), homeruns (12), RBi (43) and total bases (113). Dulaney and junior Mike Mihalik led the pitching staff with four wins each and Mihalik posted a staff best 3.44 ERA.
