UNC Wilmington 3, Delaware 1 April 4, 2003 Kris Dufner hits fourth homer of the season in Blue Hen loss   WILMINGTON, NC -- Jake Mullis pitched eight plus innings to lead UNC Wilmington to a 3-1 win over the University of Delaware in Colonial Athletic Association baseball action tonight at Brooks Field in Wilmington, NC. With the Seahawks clinging to a 3-1 lead in the top of the ninth, Blake Cross spelled Mullis with runners at second and third and no one out. But the Seahawk stopper induced a ground ball back to the mound by freshman left fielder Joe Couden and then fanned senior designated hitter Doug Eitelman and freshman pinch hitter Daryl Holcomb to end the game. The Hens trailed 3-0 heading to the ninth inning until senior third baseman Kris Dufner led off with his fourth homer this season and 19th of his career. Next batter, junior center fielder Steve Van Note reached on an error and senior first baseman Steve Harden folowed with a drive deep to left field that just twisted foul. He proceeded to double down the left field line chasing Mullis from the game. Harden went 2-for-4. Mullis worked into the ninth and allowed one run on seven hits, walking none and matching his career high with nine strikeouts. Cross collected his league leading seventh save on the season after retiring all three batters he faced. Sophomore righty Jason Rogers was the tough luck loser for Delaware, going the distance and giving up 11 hits, walking three and striking out seven. He dropped to 1-5 on the season. UNC Wilmington (23-11, 4-3 CAA) pushed across a run in the first inning on an RBI double by Matt Sutton. Freshman shortstop Todd Davison continued his torrid hitting with two more hits to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. Davison, who is now just two games short of tying the Delaware freshman record of 16 consecutive games with a hit set in 1995 by Brian August, has two or more hits seven times this season. UNCW plated two runs on four hits and took advantage of two costly Delaware errors in the bottom of the eighth to build a 3-0 advantage. Jamie Hemingway kicked off the rally with a double off the base of the leftfield wall and moved to third on Matt Sutton's grounder to second. After Jon Davis drew a walk, Russ Simmerman pushed a bunt just past Rogers to score Hemingway. Rogers threw the ball wild to first and Davis was gunned down at home trying to score on the play. After Simmerman took second on the play, Aaron Smith followed with an RBI double to bring Simmerman home with the third run of the game. The Blue Hens (9-16, 1-2 CAA) will take on UNC Wilmington in game two of a three game weekend series in Wilmington, NC. First pitch has been moved up to 4 p.m. from 7 p.m. due to the possibility of rain in the evening.
