UNCW 7, Delaware 6 April 6, 2003 Brent Rogers is thrown out at home to end game WILMINGTON, NC -- UNC Wilmington centerfielder Jamie Hemingway gunned down Delaware pinch-runner Brent Rogers at home plate to end the game and preserve a 7-6 victory for the Seahawks in a rained-soaked Colonial Athletic Association baseball contest today at Brooks Field in Wilmington, NC. UNC Wilmington swept the highly contested weekend series with the University of Delaware three games to none. Chris Coughlin picked up the victory, allowing five earned runs on six hits over eight innings, walking three and striking out eight. Blake Cross, for the third straight game, picked up the save and leads the conference with nine on the season. Sophomore righty Scott Rambo took the loss, lasting two innings, giving up five runs and nine hits and stuck out one. With the Hens trailing 7-5 in the ninth, senior catcher Matt Wimer doubled in senior rightfielder Doug Eitelman to cut the Delaware deficit to 7-6. Wimer was lifted for the pinch runner Rogers. Following a ground out by Freshman shortstop Todd Davison (Somers Point, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) , sophomore second baseman Brock Donovan looped a single to left field, Hemingway charged and threw a strike to the plate to seal the win. After a 1:28 rain delay, the Blue Hens made things interesting as junior first baseman Mark Michael belted a two-run shot in the top of th sixth, cutting their deficit to 6-5. UNCW jumped out early with a pair of runs in the first and second inning for a 4-0 lead. Hemingway also did damage at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two doubles and drove in three runs. Chip Grawey also went 3-for-5 while Matt Wright had two hits as the first three hitters in the Seahawk lineup went a combined 9-for-15 on the day. Delaware used a two-out rally to climb back into it in the top of the third as Donovan, senior designated hitter Kris Dufner and junior centerfielder Steve Van Note ripped consecutive RBI singles. Donovan and Michael each went 2-for-4 on the day. Davison's hitting streak was stopped at 15 games with an 0-for-4 afternoon. Davison falls one game short of the UD freshman record of 16 set by Brian August in 1995. The Blue Hens (9-18, 1-4 CAA) will host Saint Joseph's on Tuesday at Bob Hannah Stadium.
