VCU 8, Delaware 2 April 25, 2003 Five Delaware errors proves too costly in setback to visiting VCU Nick DeCarlo lined his second homer of the season in the eighth inning   NEWARK, DE -- Three first inning runs by Virginia Commonwealth and five fielding errors provided too much to overcome for the University of Delaware in an 8-2 setback to the visiting Rams' in Colonial Athletic Association baseball action Friday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium. Rams' starter Justin Orenduff pitched 6.0 innings allowing one unearned run, walked five and struck out seven to improve his record to 6-2 while Blue Hen starter Mark Michael suffered the loss as he went 6.0 innings allowing six hits, four runs (three earned) and struck out nine to fall to 2-3 on the year. Cla Meredith pitched the final three innings for VCU to pick up his third save on the year. The Rams' pushed across runs in the top half of the first on a wild pitch, an error and a double by Jeff Parrish for a 3-0 lead. Delaware scored its first run when Orenduff could not field a Steve Van Note grounder and Brent Rogers came across cutting the Blue Hen deficit to 3-1. Rogers went 2-for-5 on the afternoon. Jose Pabon scored in the fourth on a passed ball for a 4-1 VCU lead. The Rams' would tack on two more runs in the seventh on an error and a RBI single by Parrish. In the ninth inning, VCU would score on a balk and a Danny Lopaze RBI double to win the first of three games this weekend between the two clubs. Senior designated hitter Nick DeCarlo hit a solo homer in the eighth, his second of the season, to account for the other Delaware run. Parrish led the Rams' offense with three hits while Eric Latura went 2-for-5 with a run scored. The Blue Hens (14-26, 4-8 CAA) return to action tomorrow when they host Virginia Commonwealth at Bob Hannah Stadium at 1 p.m. Va.
