NEWARK, DE -- Virginia
Commonwealth put its pitching staff to good use today as the
Rams' swept a doubleheader and the three game weekend series
from host University of Delaware in Colonial Athletic
Association baseball at Bob Hannah Stadium. VCU won 5-4 and
5-2 today while winning 8-2 on Friday afternoon.
The Rams' improve to 33-10 on the season
and are in first-place in the Colonial Division with a 14-3
CAA record. The Blue Hens are now 14-28 on the year and in
fourth-place in the Division with a 4-10 record.
In game one, VCU reliever's Cla Meredith
and Brian Marshall combined for 3.2 innings of three hit
ball and struck out four batters as they held on for the 5-4
win. Meredith picked up the win to improve to 6-0 on the
year while Marshall got his 10th save.
VCU went ahead 2-0 on a two RBI single
through a drawn-in infield by Justin Mattison in the third.
The Hens got a run back in the bottom half of the inning
when senior shortstop Kris Dufner scored on a wild
pitch.
Delaware would go ahead 3-2 in the fourth
when Rams' first baseman Danny Lopaze fielded a bunt by
freshman third baseman Brent Rogers and Lopaze
proceeded to make an errant throw to third trying to get
Blue Hen runner Dave Harden, who wandered off the
base too far, but Harden and freshman second baseman Todd
Davison would come around to score when the ball ended
up in left field. Dufner followed with an RBI single to give
Delaware a 4-2 lead.
VCU came right back with three runs in
the fifth including an RBI single by Nick Jones that put the
Rams' up for good 5-4.
In the nightcap, junior centerfielder
Steve Van Note crushed his seventh homer of the
season to give Delaware a 1-0 lead in the second. Senior
rightfielder Doug Eitelman singled in senior
designated hitter Nick DeCarlo three batters later
for a 2-0 advantage.
The Rams' would tie the game 2-2 on a
Jose Pabon sacrifice fly and Jones scored on a wild pitch in
the fifth. Pabon added an RBI single in the seventh to put
VCU ahead and they would tack on two insurance runs in the
ninth scoring on two wild pitches.
Delaware starter Mike Mihalik went
the distance in game two scattering 10 hits allowing five
runs and struck out seven. Game one starter Jason
Rogers also pitched a complete game giving up nine hits
and five runs with four strikeouts.
Delaware's seven seniors, Dufner,
DeCarlo, Eitelman, Matt Wimer, Jason Vincent, Ryan
Dulaney and Steve Harden were honored before game
one for their contributions to the Blue Hen baseball
program.
The Blue Hens (14-28, 4-10 CAA) return to
action Tuesday when they host the University of Maryland at
Bob Hannah Stadium at 3 p.m.
