Tribe Scores Three
in Seventh to Take CAA
Contest
WILLIAMSBURG, VA -- Delaware
committed two seventh inning errors which led to three
William & Mary runs which erased a 3-1 Blue Hens lead,
and reliever Bill Bray retired all six batters he faced over
the final two innings-five by strikeout-as the Tribe claimed
its ninth straight CAA win with a 4-3 triumph over Delaware
Friday night at Plumeri Park.
William & Mary, winners of 9 of its
last 10 games, improves to 29-16, 12-3 in the CAA, while the
Blue Hens fall to 18-32, 6-13 in the CAA.
William and Mary starter Chris Ray
improved to 6-5 on the year after allowing three runs on
four hits while striking out six in seven innings of work,
while Blue Hens starter Jason Rogers dropped to 2-8 after
giving up all four Tribe runs on six hits in six innings of
work. Bray earned his third save after retiring all six
batters he faced. He struck out five and the other out came
courtesy of a groundout to first.
Delaware opened the scoring in the third.
Dave Harden drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a
groundout, and came around to score on Todd Davisons
single back through the middle, as he barely beat the throw
home from centerfielder Terry Revere to give UD a 1-0
lead.
The Hens added to their lead in the
fourth when Kris Dufner blasted his eighth homer of the year
to right, a solo shot, to widen the lead to 2-0.
W&M cut that lead in half in the
fourth, as Tim Jones led off the frame with an opposite
field double down the left field line, and after a walk to
Trey Wakefield and a flyout by Kyle Padgett, Rogers walked
C.J. Stimson to load the bases for Mike DeCarlo, who lifted
a deep fly ball to right to score Jones from third to trim
the margin to 2-1.
Delaware extended its lead back to two
runs in the sixth, as Dufner led off with a double to the
gap in right center, moved to third on flyout to center, and
scored on Steve Van Notes sacrifice fly to right to
widen the lead to 3-1.
But that lead did not last long, as the
Tribe took the lead for good in the seventh. Lentz and
Michael Brown blasted back-to-back doubles to leadoff the
inning, with Browns two-bagger bringing in Lentz to
cut the lead to one at 3-2, and then Jones came to the plate
and squibbed a comebacker to Rogers, who turned and fired to
third to cut down Brown, but his throw was wild, allowing
Brown to score to tie the game as Jones advanced to third on
the play.
Stimson gave the Tribe its first lead on
the next pitch, delivering a sacrifice fly to left to score
Jones to give W&M a 4-3 lead.
Bray set down the order in the eighth and
ninth to preserve the Tribes fifth-consecutive CAA
series win of the year. Brown and Jones each collected two
hits as the Tribe finished the game with eight on the
night.
Dufner had two of the Hens' four hits and
senior first baseman Steve Harden was 1 for 4. Harden tied
the Delaware career games played mark of 213 set by
Dan Colunio in 1994-97.
The third and final game of the series
Saturday afternoon at 4:00.
