Dave Harden Hit Two Homers and Knocks in Five Runs to Lead the Way

WILLIAMSBURG, VA -- Sophomore rightfielder Dave Harden smacked the first two home runs of his career, collected three hits, and knocked in career-high five runs as the University of Delaware scored nine runs in the final four innings on the way to a 10-2 Colonial Athletic Association baseball victory over host William & Mary Saturday afternoon at Plumeri Park.

The Blue Hens, who lost the first two games of the three-game weekend CAA set to the Tribe, salvaged a win and improved to 19-32 (7-13 CAA) while snapping William & Mary's nine-game conference winning streak which dated back to April 12. The Tribe, which has already qualified for the CAA Tournament May 20-24 in Manteo, NC, fell to 29-17, 12-4.

Delaware banged out 11 hits, reaching doubles figures in that category for the fourth time in the last nine games. The eight-run winning margin was the highest for the Hens since a 15-1 win over UMBC back on March 25.

Blue Hen starter Mike Mihalik put in an outstanding effort on the mound, allowing just six hits and one run while striking out eight without a walk in seven innings of action to improve to 4-3. Scott Rambo pitched the final two innings to keep the Hens in front. The Hens handed William & Mary starter Chris Shaver his first loss of the season. Shaver left the game after five innings trailing 1-0 and suffered the loss, falling to 4-1.

The game was a pitching duel between Mihalik and Shaver after five innings as the Hens scored the first run of the game in the fourth when Harden hit his first homer of the game to left field.

Delaware upped the lead to 4-0 with three runs in the sixth as Harden delivered a three-run home run off Tribe reliever Hunter Barden with no outs. The Tribe added a single run in the bottom half of the inning, but the Hens struck for four more in the seventh as Brock Donovan scored on a wild pitch, Nick DeCarlo hit a run-scoring double, Doug Eitelman knocked in a run on a fielder's choice, and DeCarlo scored on a throwing error.

The Hens tacked on two more in the eighth to put the game away as DeCarlo hit an RBI single and Harden closed the scoring with another run-scoring single for the 10-1 lead.

Harden and Donovan each collected three hits on the afternoon while DeCarlo was 2 for 5 with two RBI. Harden's older brother, first baseman Steve Harden, scored three runs on the day and set a new UD record for career games played with 214. Tim Jones knocked in both William & Mary runs to lead the Tribe.

Delaware will continue action Tuesday as the Hens travel to the University of Maryland for a 5 p.m. doubleheader with the Terrapins. Blue Hen third-year head coach Jim Sherman needs just one to reach 100 for his career at Delaware.
