NC -- Dave Harden and Bryan Hagerich each
delivered run-scoring singles in the top of the 10th inning
as sixth-seeded University of Delaware pulled off an upset
in the first round of the Colonial Athletic Association
Baseball Championships with an 8-5 win over top seed George
Mason Wednesday afternoon at UNC Wilmington's Brooks Field.
Delaware (31-22), which won its third
straight game, captured its first CAA Tournament win since a
4-1 first-round victory over George Mason in 2002. The Blue
Hens will return to action Thursday at 3:30 p.m. when they
take on No. 4 William & Mary. William & Mary fell to
No. 3 Virginia Commonwealth 4-3 Wednesday. No. 2 UNC
Wilmington was taking on No. 5 Old Dominion in the other
first round game Wednesday night.
The double-elimination tournament
continues May 28-29 with the champion earning an automatic
berth into the NCAA Tournament.
The Blue Hens jumped out to a 5-0 lead
after seven innings and appeared to be in control before the
Patriots (37-16) scored one run in the eighth inning and
four more in the ninth to knot the game at 5-5 and send the
game into extra innings.
Todd Davison opened the 10th inning with
a leadoff single off George Mason reliever John Morrison
(7-4) and advanced to second on a groundout by Steve Van
Note. Harden followed with an RBI single to give the
Hens a 6-5 lead and Hagerich followed two batters later with
a run-scoring single off Jason Mills to up the lead to 7-5.
The Hens added an insurance run one batter later when
Brian Valichka scored on a wild pitch.
Delaware reliever Joe Coudon (4-3)
pinned down the win in the bottom of the 10th for the Hens.
After allowing a walk to Bruce Baldwin and a single to Robby
Jacobsen with one out, Coudon got Jimmy Freund to ground out
to second base for the second out and clinched the win when
Jeff Palumbo flied out to Harden in right field to end the
game.
The Blue Hens built the 5-0 lead off
All-CAA pitcher Stacen Gant, scoring a single run in the
second, fourth, and seventh innings and adding two runs in
the third. Junior designated hitter Kelly Buber
(right) hit his eighth home run of the season with a solo
shot in the second, Davidson keyed a two-run third with an
RBI groundout, Ed McDonell added a run-scoring single
in the fourth, and Valichka scored on a wild pitch in the
seventh.
Delaware senior righthander Mike
Mihalik started and blanked the Patriots over the first
seven innings, holding George Mason to just six hits, before
being removed in the seventh after Palumbo led off the
inning with a double. Coudon came in for the Hens and
allowed the Patriots' first run on a sacrifice fly by Chris
Looze.
George Mason then sent the game into
extra innings by scoring four runs with two outs off Coudon
in the ninth inning. Matt Cooksey delivered a two-run single
to cut the lead to 5-3 and Looze followed with a two-run
double to tie the game at 5-5.
Harden, Valichka, Rogers, and Brock
Donovan each collected two hits as Delaware banged out
12 hits with Valichka scoring three runs. George Mason
collected 11 hits but stranded 11 runners for the game.
